Featured:
Smirnoff “The Effect is Shattering”
These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’ for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)
The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.
Featured:
ERP Marshall Plan Posters
A few of the original vintage posters produced for the post-war US sponsored European Recovery Program (1948) Marshall Plan are listed in our next auction. These designs were all submitted for the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held in Europe.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

Spotlight on Mid-Century Posters
Mid-century refers to the twentieth century design period that influenced all aspects of art and design, including architecture, interiors and graphic design. Typical features of this modernist style include more open floor plans, simple and natural sculptural shapes, Scandinavian forms and forward thinking atomic space age themes to produce objects that would prove to be popular, comfortable and functional.
Many of the posters created during this period are colourful and fun, featuring iconic designs by notable artists with curved geometric shapes, repeating patterns and bold colours. Below are a few of the original vintage mid-century posters that we currently have in stock (click on the images for more information):

Spotlight on Art Nouveau Posters
Art Nouveau was an art movement developed from the 1890s to the 1910s, inspired by natural flowing curved lines, female forms and stylised botanical shapes.
This “New Art” movement influenced all aspects of applied art and design, including architecture, painting, graphic design, jewellery and metal work. The French name for this movement was also known as Secessionism and Jugendstil (among others).
A highly decorative style, Art Nouveau drew on nature and fantasy, as well as other developing movements of the time including the floral work of William Morris, the Arts and Crafts movement, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, French Rococo and Japanese art.
Notable poster artists and graphic designers from the Art Nouveau era include Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), Jules Cheret (1836-1932), and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Their vibrant designs often incorporated free-spirited females of the optimistic Belle Epoque period; the ‘Golden Age’ before the outbreak of World War One. Art Nouveau paved the way for Art Deco and the later Modernism art movement.
A handful of our current stock of original antique and vintage Art Nouveau posters are featured below (click on the images for more information):

In The Spotlight: Cultural Revolution Propaganda Posters
The Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution in China (1966-1976) was launched by the founding father of the Chinese Communist Party, Chairman Mao (Mao Zedong; 1893-1976), following the political and economic failure of his Great Leap Forward campaign (1958-1962).
Dynamic propaganda posters were produced to reach the masses, often featuring images of the leader with workers, soldiers, large red flags and slogans in bold red text.
Below are a few of our original vintage posters from the period (click on the images for more information):
Charge Courageously (1965) Wipe Out The Enemy (1965)
PLA: Be A Fierce Tiger On Land, Flood Dragon On Water (1965)

→ This extraordinary collection of Soviet and Palestine posters was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.
In March 1969, the seller joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students on a visit to the USSR. During his stay in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities who sent several parcels of posters to him at university.
The Palestinian posters were obtained in Summer 1971 when the seller travelled to the Middle East to apply for a postgraduate course at the American University in Beirut. On arrival he realised the university was not fully functioning due to the unstable and rapidly deteriorating political and military situation. He stayed in Beirut for two months then visited Syria, Jordan and Israel, returning home via Beirut. At the time, he considered becoming a journalist so arranged an interview with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). During this meeting he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP was adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.

Spotlight on Art Deco Posters
Art Deco is one of the most widely recognised and celebrated design styles, conveying visions of sleek ocean liners, the jazz age of the Roaring Twenties, the industrialised Machine Age between the wars, stylised typography and elegant craftsmanship.
Originating in France, Art Deco (short for Arts Decoratifs) influenced design during the 1920s and 1930s in everything from architecture and fashion to transport and home furnishings, and was reflected in the graphic design and poster art produced during the period.
100 years on, this iconic art movement continues to radiate luxury and glamour today. A handful of our current stock of original vintage Art Deco posters are featured below (click on the images for more information):
