AntikBar Exhibition Catalogues

Our exhibition catalogues are available to read online below and printed copies are available to purchase via the Our Publications page on our website (with worldwide delivery), and our booklet on original vintage posters is available to pick up at our gallery:

The Age of Steam Exhibition Catalogue

Full colour catalogue printed for our exhibition – The Age of Steam – showcasing a variety of stunning ocean liner and railway posters from around the world, primarily from the 1920-30s; the Golden Age of Travel.

This was a time when travel was not merely a way of getting somewhere but a destination and an experience in itself. Powered by steam, mighty hand-crafted machines carried passengers for days on their journey to new adventures. The essence of romance and style of this period is truly captured by the elegant poster designs of the era.

Come Fly With Me Exhibition Catalogue

Full colour catalogue printed for our summer exhibition – Come Fly With Me – showcasing a variety of flight-related travel, advertising and propaganda posters from around the world.

These original vintage posters evoke strong feelings of nostalgia and truly capture the essence of travel in the earlier days of flying, many featuring airlines that no longer exist today.

Experience the thrill and elegance of travelling to exotic destinations by propeller plane in the 1920-30s and the excitement of boarding a new jet plane in the modern mid-century era. Step back in time and travel the world in style through this stunning artwork.

Let It Snow Exhibition Catalogue

Full colour catalogue printed for our exhibition of skiing and winter sports posters – Let It Snow – at our gallery from 1 November to 10 December 2016.

These dynamic, glamorous and eye-catching posters were originally produced to entice holiday-makers and thrill-seekers to alpine resorts. Many of the early- to mid-century skiing and winter sports posters feature strong images that were designed by notable artists of the time and the rarity of those that have survived makes them highly collectible and a good investment. Packed with decorative appeal and nostalgia for the Golden Age of Travel, they are ideal for decorating chalets and provide a stunning reminder back home of a memorable ski trip.

Women At War Exhibition Catalogue

Full colour catalogue printed for our exhibition of posters issued during World War Two – Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War – with a foreword by Hugh Cullimore, Art Historian and former poster specialist at the Australian War Memorial.

This exhibition held at our gallery from International Women’s Day to Victory Day (8 March to 9 May) focuses on the role of women during WWII featuring posters issued by both Allied and Axis powers, in particular the UK, USA, USSR and some Nazi-occupied countries.

Labour shortages on the home front during the Second World War led to dramatic changes to the role of women in society. Jobs in factories, agriculture, nursing and other vital military and civilian industries that were previously seen as occupations mainly for men were now opened up to women. Posters played a big part in the publicity campaigns, using patriotic appeal to encourage women to help win the war and secure victory by joining the workforce.

The exhibition shows how poster design and visual messaging varied in the different countries depending on the impact of war on the population and the roles of women in the conflict. Although they replaced men in the war production in all countries, women’s day-to-day realities were very different.

Introduction to Original Vintage Posters Booklet

Posters are a true form of art with a purpose aimed at delivering a particular message through striking designs. These original vintage posters were created to grab the attention of passers-by, presenting artists with the challenge of condensing the message or a concept into a precise, short visual and written form in a single artwork. They are important items of social history that capture the essence of the time they were printed.

Original vintage posters are recognised as a sound art investment that can be enjoyed on your walls every day. AntikBar provides collection advice and conducts searches for clients, interior designers, collectors, museums and other institutions. Poster values have been steadily increasing year-on-year and quality pieces are very much in demand. The most influential factors are rarity, the artist or designer, subject, style, period and condition.

This information booklet is available to pick up for free at our gallery and accompanies our Introduction to Collecting Posters talk. Visit also www.antikbar.co.uk/collections_advice/

☆ Sneak Peek ☆  Our next auction on 28 January includes a few original 1930s architect sketches for new modernist London Underground stations (part of the 1935-1940 London Transport LPTB New Works Programme) railway architecture posters.

This sketch for Hanger Lane tube station on the Central Line was designed by the Australian architect Brian B. Lewis who worked for the Great Western Railway GWR. Construction on the building started in 1939 but the project was put on hold during World War Two and completed by Frederick F.C. Curtis in 1949 based on the original design by Lewis.
