In The News:
“Renowned commercial graphic designer AM Cassandre (1901-68) produced this poster promoting the Italian city of Venice in 1951…” One of the vintage posters from our auction on Saturday 3 August is featured in this week’s Antiques Trade Gazette (Previews, p26)
Post-Auction Highlights:
“ATG’s selection of hammer highlights over the past week includes a Venetian travel poster of a gondolier… offered online by poster specialist AntikBar of King’s Road, Chelsea, on August 3. It soared over its estimate of £1200-2400 to make a hammer price of £4800…” Read more in this week’s Antiques Trade Gazette (Bid Barometer Top Selling Lots – issue 2404, page 17).
Two of the “remarkable Mexico 68 posters” in our August 3 auction were featured by the Antiques Trade Gazette in their September Market Report on Sporting Memorabilia (issue 2410, page 18)
Featured:
Smirnoff “The Effect is Shattering”
These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’ for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)
The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.
Featured:
ERP Marshall Plan Posters
A few of the original vintage posters produced for the post-war US sponsored European Recovery Program (1948) Marshall Plan are listed in our next auction. These designs were all submitted for the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held in Europe.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

Fun Travel Poster Quiz – Name The City
As the summer holiday period kicks in, we thought you might like to test your vintage travel poster knowledge with these ten cropped posters depicting different cities from around the world – you simply have to name the city (no cheating…don’t click on the image until you’ve given your answer!):
Well done! Give yourself an extra pat on the back if you were able to correctly name any other information, such as the artist, year and name of the airline or railway company that issued the poster.
