These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’  for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)

The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.

These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

When one just isn’t enough…

…go for a series! Sometimes a few framed original vintage posters work better than one large statement piece poster, for example, if the wall space isn’t high enough or you’re looking to brighten up an otherwise dark corridor with splashes of colour.

Let’s start with a few posters from this wonderfully retro series from the 1960s featuring some quirky slogans and fun images:

Come rain or snow, this original vintage 1958 London Transport series will certainly create an amusing focal point:

…and from Venice to Paris, this original 1981 Orient Express series will appeal to Art Deco lovers and travel romantics:

Propaganda posters were also often published as a series, such as these original vintage 1952 safety posters produced by the US Government for their pilots during the Cold War era:

PP0029_1_m

…and we have a few small and mid sized posters from this World War Two series, printed by the US Government in 1942 to help their troops recognise their allies:

For some carefree pin-up style fun, this vintage 1950s advertising series by Dickens for Goodyear soles aims to draw your attention to these ladies’ pretty feet:

Meanwhile, this dynamic series of original 1930s Castrol posters promotes their sponsored speed records and distance achievements on land and in the air:

PS0199_1_m  PS0274_1_m

For more sporting inspiration with an artistic touch, this series of original 1972 posters commissioned for the Munich Olympics aimed to “represent the intertwining of sports and art worldwide”:

Posters are suitable for any room of the home or office and this series of original 1930s Bovril posters that resemble the public service announcements of the time might provide some fun for the kitchen:

This series of child health posters was published in 1952 to promote “good health habits in school and at home” and would look fantastic in a child’s bedroom, playroom, nursery or school:

We have plenty to choose from – including more from some of the series featured above and some previously featured 1969 travel advertising posters for SNCF by Salvador Dali and a collection of 1986-1992 London Underground art posters – so why not browse our website and our blog for more ideas, such as decorating a cinema room with original vintage James Bond or Marilyn Monroe posters. News Bite: our recent Facebook slideshows

Here’s a quick look at a couple of slideshows featured on our Facebook page this week (for more images, slideshows and updates, “like” our page at www.facebook.com/antikbar.co.uk):

Happy 125th Birthday to the Eiffel Tower…!

The iconic Eiffel Tower was designed by Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair). It was built on the Champ de Mars in Paris between 1887-1889 and opened on 31 March 1889 with a permit initially for 20 years (until 1909). This grand entrance arch for the Fair was named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. As a valuable asset for communication, the Eiffel Tower was not dismantled and it has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. At 324m tall, it was the tallest man-made structure at the time (until 1930); now it is the tenth tallest lattice tower the world (the Tokyo SkyTree currently holds the number one position at 634m tall). “Joyeux Anniversaire!”

“The unveiling of the Le Mans 24-Hours poster is always an eagerly-awaited event by the fans… This poster defines an area of rich expression aimed at a wide-ranging public by projecting them into a powerful and attractive imaginary environment: Pride of place goes to the new prototypes launched in 2014 which, propelled by luminous, electric colours, leap out of the poster; A cleaner and less figurative universe than in the past, which fits perfectly with the new slogan – A new era dawns!; The integration of spectators of all ages whose faces show the expressions of awe and the incredible emotions experienced…” Read the full news article at News via http://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/the-2014-le-mans-24-hours-poste-unveiled-in-geneva-_2_2_1746_14271.html
