Fun Travel Poster Quiz – Name The City

As the summer holiday period kicks in, we thought you might like to test your vintage travel poster knowledge with these ten cropped posters depicting different cities from around the world – you simply have to name the city (no cheating…don’t click on the image until you’ve given your answer!):

In the Spotlight: American World War One Posters

100 years ago, in April 1917, the American Congress voted to declare war on Germany, followed by a declaration of war against Austria-Hungary in December 1917.

PP0325_1_mAlthough keen to remain neutral and keep out of the war, America had started to build up its military forces as a defensive measure following the sinking of the Lusitana in 1915 by a German U-boat, killing 128 American citizens.

In 1917 German submarines resumed sinking ships crossing the Atlantic, including American merchant ships, and President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to “make the world safe for democracy” by voting in favour of war.

Joining the war as an independent power, the U.S. provided supplies, raw materials and war loans, and sent soldiers to join the allied forces on the Western Front in 1918. Their involvement PW0278_1_multimately led to a victorious end to WW1 in November 1918.

At home, Americans were encouraged to help with the war effort by increasing the production of munitions and food supply to support the country and troops. A nation-wide propaganda campaign to educate and enforce a sense of patriotism across the whole population included speeches at public gatherings, news articles and the display of posters.

Most of these posters were torn down and destroyed after the war; those that did survive now form an important part of social history.

Here is our current collection of American World War One posters (click on the images for more information):

++ Update ++

In the News: “Oh, I do like to be beside a seaside poster worth £5,000: Nostalgia for romantic holiday era creates boom in demand for old posters…

Once fashionable hotspots such as Southport, Blackpool, Scarborough and Bognor Regis may have long lost their status as luxury destinations, but…this does not stop many reminiscing about this bygone age.

A yearning for a more romantic holiday era dominated by wholesome family values has created a wave of nostalgia for old posters of the British seaside. It has also pushed up values of collectable posters by 20 per cent over the past decade.

…collectable travel poster artists of the time are Tom Purvis, Ronald Lampitt, Frank Sherwin, Alan Durman, Edward McKnight Kauffer, Frank Newbould and Norman Wilkinson.

Splashing Out:
– Until the late Victorian era, holidays were for the wealthy only. Workers were given Sunday off for church, but it was not until near the end of the 19th Century that people started to get Saturday afternoon off too – and the weekend was born.
– Bathing in sea water was believed to be good for the health and this led to the growth of resorts such as Brighton, Margate, Eastbourne, Blackpool, Southport and Bournemouth.
– Bognor was granted ‘Regis’ status after King George V convalesced there in the 1920s following lung surgery.
– A rapidly expanding rail network boosted the appeal of seaside resorts – helped by rail company posters romanticising them. The early 20th Century was the golden age of rail before the mass ownership of cars and the advent of package trips…”
