Spotlight on Art Nouveau Posters

PT1040_1_mArt Nouveau was an art movement developed from the 1890s to the 1910s, inspired by natural flowing curved lines, female forms and stylised botanical shapes.

This “New Art” movement influenced all aspects of applied art and design, including architecture, painting, graphic design, jewellery and metal work. The French name for this movement was also known as Secessionism and Jugendstil (among others).

A highly decorative style, Art Nouveau drew on nature and fantasy, as well as other developing movements of the time including the floral work of William Morris, the Arts and Crafts movement, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, French Rococo and Japanese art.PA1236_1_m

Notable poster artists and graphic designers from the Art Nouveau era include Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), Jules Cheret (1836-1932), and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Their vibrant designs often incorporated free-spirited females of the optimistic Belle Epoque period; the ‘Golden Age’ before the outbreak of World War One. Art Nouveau paved the way for Art Deco and the later Modernism art movement.

Feel the Force: Original Vintage Star Wars Posters

PC0435_1_mAs fans around the world eagerly await the release of the latest movie in the Star Wars series, Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), we’re stepping back in time to look at some of the original vintage posters produced for the first trilogy of this epic space saga:

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

This iconic image was designed by the notable PC0399_1_mmovie poster artist, Tom Jung, for the first episode of the Star Wars trilogy – Star Wars / Episode IV: A New Hope (1977). PC0516_1_m

The ‘Style D’ poster design features a Star Wars poster pasted on wood with Obi-Wan Kenobi visible on a torn poster behind it.

The worldwide phenomenon of the first film was followed by two equally as successful movies, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi (1983), to complete the original trilogy.

PC0458_1_m  PC0400_1_m

Eye-catching teaser posters were designed to build up the excitement: “It’s back! The Force will be with you for two weeks only” and “The original is back.”

PC0427_1_m  PC0426_1_m  PC0398_1_m

The Star Wars films created by the renowned filmmaker George Lucas star Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, David Prowse as Darth Vader, Frank Oz as Yoda, Kenny Baker as R2-D2, Anthony Daniels as C-3P0, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. The notable composer and conductor, John Williams, composed the instantly recognisable film score.
PC0470_1_m
The saga continues: the first of two poster designs for the final trilogy, this horizontal poster is slightly smaller than standard quad size, issued for display by London Underground.PC0499_1_m

In 1990, Star Wars was finally released in Russia. At that time, local artists produced posters for foreign movies without any knowledge of the films, which led to some unique designs. This rare poster describes the movie as a “galactic Western” and features an imaginary image by Yury Bokser dominated by an unusual depiction of what could be Jabba the Hut and the Death Star with stars shooting out from the centre.

Also on display is one of the great unseen treasures of movie poster art for over 35 years: Star Wars painted in 1977 by legendary poster artist Tom Beauvais. A very special opportunity to acquire a limited edition, hand signed and numbered print accompanies this exhibition.

Tom-Beauvais-Star-Wars-1977“Beauvais’ bold composition is dominated by an over-sized Luke and Leia. Particular attention has been paid to capturing actor Mark Hamill’s likeness, and uniquely this remains the only theatrical Star Wars poster in which Luke is depicted in his Stormtrooper disguise. Icons of Star Wars – R2D2, C3PO, the Death Star, X-Wings, and lightsabers – also feature, as does an indication of the written credits along the bottom of the poster…”

Our recent slideshow featuring a few of our original vintage posters and publications by designers profiled by Sophie Churcher for Christie’s South Kensington (click here to read the full article and click on the image links below for more information):

“The focus for collectors of posters is very often subject matter. The subject of a work is key to its ability to connect with the viewer and in turn increase its value. Having said that there are masters of poster design as there are of art and these artists play an important role in shaping the market for collectable pieces.

Spotlight on the Stenberg Brothers

PC0362_1_m

Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgii (1900-1933) Stenberg rank amongst the most notable Soviet Constructivist artists and graphic designers of the early 20th century.

Both brothers were born in Moscow to a Swedish father and Russian mother and both studied engineering before attending the Stroganov School of Applied Art in Moscow and Free Studios. They produced their first works of art in 1918 and co-founded the OBMOKhU (Society of Young Artists) in 1919, exhibiting with fellow Constructivist artists from 1919-1923, and were members of the INKhUK (the short-lived Institute of Artistic Culture) from 1921-1924.

Now firmly established in the avant-garde art world, they went on to experiment in different media, from theatre sets and costume design to sculpture. It was, however, their revolutionary approach to movie poster design that was to set them apart from their contemporaries. Pulling together their artistic experience and knowledge of film theory, the movie posters produced by the Stenberg Brothers during the 1920-30s displayed an innovative use of perspective, geometry, typography and colour to convey a dynamic sense of movement and energetic depth.

Here is our current collection of original vintage booklets and posters featuring artwork by the Stenberg Brothers:

This stunning and rare Battleship Potemkin poster by the Stenberg Brothers is considered to be one of the greatest movie posters of all time. The exceptionally bold and powerful avant-garde poster design was produced to promote Sergei Eisenstein’s epic propaganda film depicting the historical 1905 naval mutiny in Odessa by the crew of Battleship Potemkin against the Tsarist officers. This pioneering silent movie is consistently voted as one of the greatest films, primarily due to Eisenstein’s use of montage and experimental film editing to create a dramatic portrayal of the events for maximum emotional effect from the audience.

The Stenberg’s creative use of vivid colours, geometry and perspective can be clearly seen to full graphic effect in this poster, complementing the movie’s sense of struggle and revolutionary air of change. As ground-breaking propaganda tools, both the movie and poster showcase an age of heavy industrialisation and move towards more modern warfare, as well as emphasising the growing unrest during this period between the ruling Tsarist elite (the officer falling overboard) and the ordinary citizen (the able-seaman standing on one of the guns). The enduring success of this poster lies in its ability to provide the viewer today with as rich and powerful an emotion through its expressive use of graphic language as the day it was originally displayed to attract the attention of a widely illiterate population almost a century ago.

Following his brother’s untimely death, Vladimir Stenberg continued to work as an artist and graphic designer (he was also selected to organise the 1947 May Day display in Moscow’s Red Square), but he was unable to surpass the success the brothers achieved as a team during the 1920s and early 1930s.

In the Spotlight: Edward McKnight Kauffer

PT0386_1_m  American artist and illustrator, Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954), was one of the most renowned poster designers of the 20th century. Born Edward Kauffer in Montana, he lived in an orphanage from 1893-1899 where he started to draw. On moving back home after his mother’s re-marriage, his mother and step-father supported his artistic talent and aspirations. He moved to San Francisco in 1910 where he worked for the art dealer and bookseller, Paul Elder, and continued his art studies in the evenings at the Mark Hopkins Institute, California School of Design. A professor at Utah University, Joseph McKnight, sponsored him in 1912 and gave him a loan to move to Paris. (Out of respect for his sponsor, Edward Kauffer adopted McKnight as his middle name.)

PT0627_1_m  In 1913 he moved to France via a short stint at the Art Institute of Chicago and a visit to Munich, where he was undoubtedly influenced by the European post-impressionist paintings and move towards modernism on display, as well as poster art and typography. He continued his studies at the Academie Moderne until the outbreak of World War One when he moved to London in 1914 with his wife, Grace Ehrlich (a pianist), and daughter, Ann.

PA0390_1_m  In London, he was introduced to Frank Pick, Publicity Manager for London Underground, leading to his commission to produce a staggering 140 posters for London Underground, later London Transport. His style of artwork developed from a more traditional painterly style to a more modern and dynamic graphic design style and his success as an advertising poster artist was outstanding. In 1921 he exhibited in New York but, not achieving the same response from commissions as he had in London, he returned to England.

PA0841_m_  In 1923, on one of his regular visits to Paris, he met Marion Dorn, an American interior designer. He left his wife and daughter for her and their relationship included professional collaboration on a few projects, such as the interior and advertising designs for Orient Lines’ flagship ocean liner. (Edward and Marion later married in 1950 but then separated in 1953.) Now a renowned graphic designer, he was also busy with other commercial clients, including BP and Shell Oil, and he was involved with illustrating books and book covers, textiles, theatre and interior design.

PP0152_1_m  At the start of World War Two, he reluctantly moved to New York. His commissions in America started with MOMA and he went on to produce propaganda posters during the war before working for his final client, American Airlines, in 1947. The success and recognition he achieved in London was soon repeated in New York and, in terms of his commercial work, he is now most well known for his London Underground, Shell and American Airlines poster artworks, as well as his book designs for Lund Humphries. Edward McKnight Kauffer was certainly a prolific and dedicated designer, working right up to his death at the age of 64 in 1954.
