→ This extraordinary collection of Soviet and Palestine posters was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.

In March 1969, the seller joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students on a visit to the USSR. During his stay in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities who sent several parcels of posters to him at university.

The Palestinian posters were obtained in Summer 1971 when the seller travelled to the Middle East to apply for a postgraduate course at the American University in Beirut. On arrival he realised the university was not fully functioning due to the unstable and rapidly deteriorating political and military situation. He stayed in Beirut for two months then visited Syria, Jordan and Israel, returning home via Beirut. At the time, he considered becoming a journalist so arranged an interview with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). During this meeting he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP was adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.

Original Antique Posters: Celebrating 100+ Years of Poster Design

Posters have been the broad disseminator of ideas and images that have BR0008_1_mreflected social and cultural changes over the course of history. Given their ease of display on walls and high visibility, posters deliver their messages to the masses in the most effective way. The discovery of colour lithography in the late 1700s/early 1800s was one of the major developments that changed poster design. This technology needed an artist who understood the intricacies of colour balance to develop the poster as an art form: Jules Cheret (1836-1932) was able to combine his artistic talent with his knowledge of lithography and is widely regarded as the father of poster art.

PS0343_1_mCheret ingeniously combined modern British printing press machines with a clean-cut approach to colours used in traditional Japanese woodblocks to print more cost effective posters that were bolder and boasted clear and well defined images. A number of notable artists, such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), followed his example in experimenting with new printing technologies and, by the late 1800s, posters were transformed into a recognisable art form and quickly became collector’s items.

Poster enthusiasts would venture out at night with damp sponges to remove the latest artwork by Cheret or Toulouse-Lautrec from the walls. PA0725_1_m (1)Poster exhibitions were held practically every year that further revealed the beauty of this new emerging art form to the public and influenced both advertisers and artists.

Being very topical, posters evoke the styles of the era and have very often survived as the best examples of art movements such as Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Constructivism. To celebrate over 100 years of poster design, here is our current collection of original antique posters dating from the 1890s to mid-1910s:

Spotlight on the Stenberg Brothers

PC0362_1_m

Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgii (1900-1933) Stenberg rank amongst the most notable Soviet Constructivist artists and graphic designers of the early 20th century.

Both brothers were born in Moscow to a Swedish father and Russian mother and both studied engineering before attending the Stroganov School of Applied Art in Moscow and Free Studios. They produced their first works of art in 1918 and co-founded the OBMOKhU (Society of Young Artists) in 1919, exhibiting with fellow Constructivist artists from 1919-1923, and were members of the INKhUK (the short-lived Institute of Artistic Culture) from 1921-1924.

Now firmly established in the avant-garde art world, they went on to experiment in different media, from theatre sets and costume design to sculpture. It was, however, their revolutionary approach to movie poster design that was to set them apart from their contemporaries. Pulling together their artistic experience and knowledge of film theory, the movie posters produced by the Stenberg Brothers during the 1920-30s displayed an innovative use of perspective, geometry, typography and colour to convey a dynamic sense of movement and energetic depth.

Here is our current collection of original vintage booklets and posters featuring artwork by the Stenberg Brothers:

Battleship Potemkin

PC0359_1_m

This stunning and rare Battleship Potemkin poster by the Stenberg Brothers is considered to be one of the greatest movie posters of all time. The exceptionally bold and powerful avant-garde poster design was produced to promote Sergei Eisenstein’s epic propaganda film depicting the historical 1905 naval mutiny in Odessa by the crew of Battleship Potemkin against the Tsarist officers. This pioneering silent movie is consistently voted as one of the greatest films, primarily due to Eisenstein’s use of montage and experimental film editing to create a dramatic portrayal of the events for maximum emotional effect from the audience.

The Stenberg’s creative use of vivid colours, geometry and perspective can be clearly seen to full graphic effect in this poster, complementing the movie’s sense of struggle and revolutionary air of change. As ground-breaking propaganda tools, both the movie and poster showcase an age of heavy industrialisation and move towards more modern warfare, as well as emphasising the growing unrest during this period between the ruling Tsarist elite (the officer falling overboard) and the ordinary citizen (the able-seaman standing on one of the guns). The enduring success of this poster lies in its ability to provide the viewer today with as rich and powerful an emotion through its expressive use of graphic language as the day it was originally displayed to attract the attention of a widely illiterate population almost a century ago.

Click here to watch the film via YouTube with English subtitles and search under Bronenosets Potyomkin / Броненосец Потемкин for more information.

Following his brother’s untimely death, Vladimir Stenberg continued to work as an artist and graphic designer (he was also selected to organise the 1947 May Day display in Moscow’s Red Square), but he was unable to surpass the success the brothers achieved as a team during the 1920s and early 1930s.
