Looking Ahead –

Posters were the most effective and broad-reaching medium for advertising and propaganda before the advent of television. Designed to grab the attention of people passing by, posters presented artists with the challenge of distilling a commissioned message to a bare minimum of words with maximum visual impact. Some of the designers achieved this goal by developing spectacular designs that exuded warmth, comfort and style or rallied the masses to new victories in war and peace. Being very topical, posters absorbed and reflected the prevailing and changing art styles and fashions at a rapid pace and became part of the avant-garde art movement. They were meant to be displayed temporarily on walls and discarded; and were not meant to survive.
Today original vintage posters make a great interior design statement that could also prove to be a valuable investment. These stylish pieces of social history can be easily adapted to any interior; with such a variety of subject matter, styles and colour schemes they are well suited for a modern office, Victorian house, luxury apartment, holiday retreat or a child’s playroom. They are a truly unique eco-friendly interior design feature, bridging both contemporary and traditional styles.
Original vintage posters are highly collectable and widely recognised as a sound art investment that appreciates over time while being enjoyed every day on the wall. Prices vary greatly depending on the rarity, artist and subject matter. The rarest and most expensive poster so far is Fritz Lang’s poster for the film Metropolis; only four of them are known to have survived and it reached $690,000 at an auction in 2005. This very same copy is going to be at auction again soon and experts believe that it might be the first poster to sell for more than $1m on the open market. Many posters, however, are still affordable and make an ideal present and focal point on the walls of a home, office or even a film set.
Posters can trigger strong emotional responses appealing to our sense of nostalgia and happy memories of childhood, travel, work interest or hobby. Advertising posters from the 1960s, for example, can be a great entry point into collecting as the designs are bright, bold and quirky. Cinema posters also represent a good investment, especially Oscar winners, popular actors and cult classics such as James Bond. Skiing posters are particularly popular at the moment, as are posters advertising past Olympic Games and other major sporting events.

Footnote: Original vintage posters proved to be a sound investment for a Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage. He sold a rare Dracula poster in April 2009 for $310,700; a return of 303% after buying the poster ten years previously for $77,000. His gain easily outpaced the minus 10% total return he would have earned on the S&P 500 over the same time period.
