Featured:
Smirnoff “The Effect is Shattering”
These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’ for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)
The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

A few of the original vintage posters produced for the post-war US sponsored European Recovery Program (1948) Marshall Plan are listed in our next auction. These designs were all submitted for the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held in Europe.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

Top Tips On Looking After Your Original Vintage Posters
We’re often asked about the best ways to look after, store and display posters. Here are our “Top Tips” in a nutshell:
Storage – Unlike many antique and vintage items, posters are relatively easy to store. Just bear in mind that the paper used for many old posters can be quite sensitive and fragile. It’s important to keep your posters away from humidity, heat, moisture, dust and light. We recommend storing them flat in drawers or on shelves, or rolled up in hard and sturdy tubes. Do not use tape or elastic bands directly on the poster when rolled or write on the posters (even on the reverse). Lie the tubes flat so the sides of the poster don’t get frayed or damaged by it moving around inside. Make sure you keep the posters off the floor level in a cool and dry place, away from any threat of flooding or dampness.
Framing – As with any artwork, avoid hanging your poster in direct sunlight. Even if you use UV resistant glass, the sun will fade the colours over time. Bathrooms and other damp areas should also be avoided as the moisture will ruin the paper. Make sure your framer doesn’t use tape, glue or any non-acid-free substances on or near your poster. Dry mounting should also be avoided (a process of gluing the poster to a mounting board using heat and pressure, which will undermine the value of your poster). The style and colour of the frame you choose is entirely aesthetic. We tend to opt for non-reflective acrylic rather than glass, which is lighter and less likely to break, with simple black frames to allow our posters to convey their messages without any distraction.
Tape – Never ever use tape. Even if you use tape on the reverse, it can still stain through to the front. Tape is also notoriously hard to remove without further damaging the paper.
Restoration – Linen backing and restoring your poster will improve its condition and strength, help prolong its life and ensure its value is maintained. Minor restoration will smooth out creases and folds and acid-free linen backing will ensure your poster is preserved and protected for the long-term. Badly damaged posters may need further restoration work to deal with staining, paper loss, holes, colour fading etc. Make sure you choose a reputable, professional poster restorer to avoid any further damage being made to your poster, which will then require further costly repair work. Bear in mind that many posters do not need to be linen backed or restored; for example, new posters or old posters that have been kept in as-new, mint condition.
Note: After many years of being a collector and having some of our posters linen backed and restored, we have teamed up with Poster Mountain in California. Poster Mountain prides itself on being the world’s premier original vintage poster and fine art conservation and restoration studio and, in turn, we are proud to offer their services to our clients. Please click here for more information (including a link to Poster Mountain’s YouTube video).

Applauding Art Deco: celebrating the style’s 90th anniversary
The latest issue of 1st Dibs’ Introspective Magazine features AntikBar in their celebration of 90 years of Art Deco style:
“Few design styles are as widely recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.
In honor of its 90th anniversary this year, we celebrate Art Deco, outlining its history and enlisting several 1stdibs Deco specialists to discuss both this revolutionary and glamorous style and the era out of which it was born.”

“Poster of the Day”: mid to end May 2012
AntikBar’s “Poster of the Day” tweets and pins have proven to be very popular with our Twitter and Pinterest followers [ @AntikBar ]. Here’s a review of the mid to end May posters, highlighting the stories behind these snapshots of time that make original vintage posters so special both for the individual buyer and serious collector:
Original vintage poster for Scandinavian Airlines System: Volez par SAS les Vikings Volants (Get away with the Flying Vikings), specially drawn for SAS by Otto Nielsen.
Like many posters, this 1950 SAS poster has been backed on linen. Cleaning, stretching and backing a poster on acid-free paper reinforced with linen will protect it from further damage caused by the elements, gently flattening any fold lines and providing strength to the paper ready for permanent display and framing (thinner paper was often used for printing as the posters were only meant for temporary display). This process, when done professionally, is fully reversible.
Original vintage advertising poster for Bovril. Printed in Britain in the 1930s, this series of posters resemble the public announcement/propaganda posters of the time.
A classic and impressively large James Bond poster for From Russia With Love, this one was designed by Grinnson for the later French release.
Original vintage propaganda poster from the USSR: “Long live our own undefeatable Red Army a strong guarantee of peaceful labour of the people of the USSR and a devoted defender of the achievements of the October Revolution”. Designed by S. Malt in 1937 and printed in Uzbekistan to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution (1917-1937). Interestingly there is a mistake in the design of the hammer and sickle with the hammer pointing downwards instead of upwards.
Original vintage Russian circus poster advertising a tour of the Paris Circus in Moscow at the Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoi Boulevard from 1st January 1959, designed by N. Akimov. The print run is marked as 5,000.
The print run gives us a good indication of how lucky we are that some posters survived the test of time, considering they were created to be pasted on walls and discarded. Some posters were kept in pristine condition by the printer and some were probably rescued by someone who appreciated the artwork; however they survived, we can now enjoy them today – and some of the rarest posters by the most notable designers are likely to fetch remarkable prices at auction.
Original vintage advertising poster promoting Navy’s range of ales and stouts. If you recognise the style, that’s because it was designed by Gilroy, the famous designer of Guinness posters (and if you’re looking for a Guinness poster, AntikBar currently has “Opening Time is Guinness Time” listed – simply do a search for this, and any other posters of interest, at AntikBar.co.uk).
