These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’  for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)

The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.

These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

USSR: Homeland of the First Cosmonaut

The Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America during the Cold War was a period of symbolic superiority that led to many pioneering technological advances. In 1957, the USSR was the first country to launch an artificial satellite – Sputnik – into outer space and the first dog into space – Laika – on board Sputnik 2.

PT0719_1_m

Four years later, on 12 April 1961, a Russian pilot and cosmonaut – Yuri Gagarin – became the first man in space, completing an orbit of the earth on board the Vostok 1 spacecraft. Gagarin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and became an international celebrity. A new commemorative day was also established – Cosmonautics Day – celebrated every year in Russia on 12 April (now recognised as the International Day of Human Space Flight by the United Nations). In 1963, Russia launched the first woman into space – Valentina Tereshkova – on board Vostok 6.

The Science Museum in London is currently hosting a unique exhibition – Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age – featuring a collection of spacecraft, memorabilia, stories and posters showing “the dramatic story of how Russia turned the dream of space travel into a reality” (18/9/2015-13/3/2016).

Slideshow – Collecting Guide: 10 Poster Designers

Our recent slideshow featuring a few of our original vintage posters and publications by designers profiled by Sophie Churcher for Christie’s South Kensington (click here to read the full article and click on the image links below for more information):

“The focus for collectors of posters is very often subject matter. The subject of a work is key to its ability to connect with the viewer and in turn increase its value. Having said that there are masters of poster design as there are of art and these artists play an important role in shaping the market for collectable pieces.

PT0130_1_m French graphic designer Jean Carlu is renowned for the distinctive, streamlined economy of form in his images, emphasising the new machine age of the early 20th century…

PA0759_1_m A.M. Cassandre produced an oeuvre of travel-related lithographic posters that are now counted among the most iconic and influential Art Deco designs in the history of the medium… Taking inspiration from contemporary avant-garde movements in art, namely Bauhaus, Cubism and Futurism, Cassandre…employed the use of unadorned linear and streamlined forms to reflect the speed and dynamism of his era.

PT0543_1_m  PA0823_1_m

PT0386_1_m  Edward McKnight Kauffer…became one of this country’s most highly influential poster artists throughout the first half of the 20th century. Starting his career in painting, he soon embraced graphic design in poster art as a burgeoning tool of communication in the modern age. He was particularly known for his work for London Underground as well as Shell Mex and B.P. Ltd…

PC0362_1_m  Constructivist Russian cinema posters are highly collectable for their innovative and experimental graphics…The Stenberg Brothers were two of the most prolific Russian film poster designers…creating graphics that became a unique art form in themselves. Through innovative techniques such as photomontage and via experimentations with typography, colour, scale and repetition, they produced imaginative, surreal and powerful imagery…”
