→ This extraordinary collection of Soviet and Palestine posters was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.

In March 1969, the seller joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students on a visit to the USSR. During his stay in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities who sent several parcels of posters to him at university.

The Palestinian posters were obtained in Summer 1971 when the seller travelled to the Middle East to apply for a postgraduate course at the American University in Beirut. On arrival he realised the university was not fully functioning due to the unstable and rapidly deteriorating political and military situation. He stayed in Beirut for two months then visited Syria, Jordan and Israel, returning home via Beirut. At the time, he considered becoming a journalist so arranged an interview with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). During this meeting he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP was adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.

++ Update ++

In the News: “Oh, I do like to be beside a seaside poster worth £5,000: Nostalgia for romantic holiday era creates boom in demand for old posters…

Once fashionable hotspots such as Southport, Blackpool, Scarborough and Bognor Regis may have long lost their status as luxury destinations, but…this does not stop many reminiscing about this bygone age.

A yearning for a more romantic holiday era dominated by wholesome family values has created a wave of nostalgia for old posters of the British seaside. It has also pushed up values of collectable posters by 20 per cent over the past decade.

…collectable travel poster artists of the time are Tom Purvis, Ronald Lampitt, Frank Sherwin, Alan Durman, Edward McKnight Kauffer, Frank Newbould and Norman Wilkinson.

Splashing Out:
– Until the late Victorian era, holidays were for the wealthy only. Workers were given Sunday off for church, but it was not until near the end of the 19th Century that people started to get Saturday afternoon off too – and the weekend was born.
– Bathing in sea water was believed to be good for the health and this led to the growth of resorts such as Brighton, Margate, Eastbourne, Blackpool, Southport and Bournemouth.
– Bognor was granted ‘Regis’ status after King George V convalesced there in the 1920s following lung surgery.
– A rapidly expanding rail network boosted the appeal of seaside resorts – helped by rail company posters romanticising them. The early 20th Century was the golden age of rail before the mass ownership of cars and the advent of package trips…”

Slideshow – Collecting Guide: 10 Poster Designers

Our recent slideshow featuring a few of our original vintage posters and publications by designers profiled by Sophie Churcher for Christie’s South Kensington (click here to read the full article and click on the image links below for more information):

“The focus for collectors of posters is very often subject matter. The subject of a work is key to its ability to connect with the viewer and in turn increase its value. Having said that there are masters of poster design as there are of art and these artists play an important role in shaping the market for collectable pieces.

PT0130_1_m French graphic designer Jean Carlu is renowned for the distinctive, streamlined economy of form in his images, emphasising the new machine age of the early 20th century…

PA0759_1_m A.M. Cassandre produced an oeuvre of travel-related lithographic posters that are now counted among the most iconic and influential Art Deco designs in the history of the medium… Taking inspiration from contemporary avant-garde movements in art, namely Bauhaus, Cubism and Futurism, Cassandre…employed the use of unadorned linear and streamlined forms to reflect the speed and dynamism of his era.

PT0386_1_m  Edward McKnight Kauffer…became one of this country’s most highly influential poster artists throughout the first half of the 20th century. Starting his career in painting, he soon embraced graphic design in poster art as a burgeoning tool of communication in the modern age. He was particularly known for his work for London Underground as well as Shell Mex and B.P. Ltd…

Spotlight on Mathieu and Dali – The Abstract and The Surreal

These colourful abstract Air France travel advertising posters by French artist, Georges Mathieu, and these ever-surreal fantastic posters for the French National Railways (SNCF) by Spanish artist, Salvador Dali, listed at www.AntikBar.co.uk are still as bright and inspiring enough as they were in the 1950s-70s for some holiday dreaming today:

PT0245_1_m   PT0456_1_m

Although he never received a formal art education, Georges Mathieu (1921-1912) became a notable French artist through his distinctive compositions using striking colours and lines to create stylish abstract masterpieces (the French equivalent of Abstract Expressionism also known as Lyrical Abstraction, Tachisme or Art Informel). These posters were commissioned by Air France during the 1960s-70s.

The prominent Spanish artist, Salvador Dali (1904-1989), was commissioned by SNCF to produce at series of advertising posters published in 1970. These artworks feature butterflies, one of the animals he used in his surreal paintings to signify transformation, from the Greek ‘psyche’ meaning butterfly but also – and perhaps more importantly for Dali – soul.

Dali’s personality was as bizarre and eccentric as his artwork, most notably in his up-turned moustache and attention-seeking antics. He was also a great sculptor, architect, movie maker and theatre scenery designer. The depth of his imagination can clearly be seen in these posters advertising train travel to popular destinations in France.
