→ This extraordinary collection of Soviet and Palestine posters was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.

In March 1969, the seller joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students on a visit to the USSR. During his stay in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities who sent several parcels of posters to him at university.

The Palestinian posters were obtained in Summer 1971 when the seller travelled to the Middle East to apply for a postgraduate course at the American University in Beirut. On arrival he realised the university was not fully functioning due to the unstable and rapidly deteriorating political and military situation. He stayed in Beirut for two months then visited Syria, Jordan and Israel, returning home via Beirut. At the time, he considered becoming a journalist so arranged an interview with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). During this meeting he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP was adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.

LudwigHohlweinMunchenThe notable German graphic artist Ludwig Hohlwein initially trained and worked as an architect. In 1906 he shifted his focus to graphic design and went on to become a prolific poster designer. Hohlwein’s distinctive style is instantly recognisable through his creative use of colour, composition and typography.

We have recently added an impressive collection of posters by Ludwig Hohlwein to our website. These posters were created during the 1900s, through the 1910s and World War One to the early 1920s (click on the images for more information):

In the News: Why vintage posters make brilliant Christmas gifts

AntikBar has been featured by Homes & Antiques and The Resident on why original vintage posters offer something unique and make ideal Christmas presents:

ha-dec-2016  Before the advent of television, posters were the most effective and broad-reaching medium for advertising and propaganda. Designed to grab the attention of people passing by, posters presented artists with the challenge of distilling a commissioned message into minimal words with maximum visual impact.

Some of the designers achieved this goal by creating spectacular designs that exuded warmth, comfort and style; others rallied the masses to new victories in war and peace. Being topical, posters absorbed and reflected the prevailing and changing art styles and fashions at a rapid pace and became part of the avant-garde art movement.

They were meant to be displayed temporarily on walls and discarded. For this reason, not many survived and this makes them highly collectable.

Today original vintage posters make a great statement and ideal Christmas presents. With such a variety of subject matter, styles and colour schemes, they can work in modern offices, apartments, Victorian houses, or children’s rooms. Posters can often trigger emotional responses, appealing to our sense of nostalgia and happy memories of childhood, travel, or hobbies, such as the Austrian art deco skiing poster above.

The other benefit is that their wide price range suits any budget. They make a fantastic talking point and a sound investment – if you get it right.

ha-dec2016  Five top tips for buying vintage posters

  • Authenticity is a key factor in determining and maintaining the value of your poster.  Consult a specialist dealer so you can be sure you’re buying an original and not a reproduction print.
  • Art Deco posters are very stylish and have a strong collector base. They look fantastic in modern homes and maintain their value.
  • Designs that represent good investments include ski posters for their timeless appeal and cinema posters, especially Oscar winners, popular actors and cult classics (such as James Bond).
  • Posters from the 1950 and 60s can be a great entry point into collecting as the designs are often bright, bold and quirky.
  • Make sure that the poster is reasonably good condition without significant losses, stains or tears. They can be restored but, depending on the extent of restoration required, this will add cost to your purchase. Avoid posters that are backed on board or posters that are laminated as this decreases their value.

When hanging, keep framing simple.  Most poster designs are bright and colourful and don’t need any additional boost or distraction.

A simple black frame works well in separating the poster from the background.  Non-reflective glass will allow it to be seen to its best effect and, like all artwork, they should never be displayed in direct sunlight.

With little of that about in December, it’s the ideal time of year to choose, share and enjoy these pieces of history. – Homes & Antiques

kings-road-antikbar-kirill-308x367  kings-road-antikbar2-residentdec2016  Christmas on the King’s Road:

Is Christmas always an exciting time for you?
The build up to Christmas is always busy for us. Posters are ideal for someone looking to give something more memorable and special. They can be tailored to a person’s interest; for example, a favourite film, holiday destination, sport or as a fun gift relating to their job or hobby, and we get quite a lot of orders.

What do you think will make you stand out this Christmas?
We are putting together a winter related poster exhibition – Let It Snow – at our gallery opening in November, which should generate some seasonal interest. A lot of the posters that will be on display are from the 1930s-50s and show a glam side to winter travel.

If you had to select one must-buy item from you, what would it be and why?
We have nearly 2,000 unique original posters in stock and it would be challenging to pick only one. My personal favourite at the moment is a fun Guinness poster – Guinness When You’re Tired – featuring a pint of Guinness sitting with hands crossed and a big smile on the creamy foam. It always makes me smile.

If you had three wishes this Christmas what would they be? It would be nice to have a bit of snow (but not too much). No disruptions to the public transport would be a bonus. Plenty of festive R&R with the family after the Christmas rush. The Resident

Travel Back in Time: Come Fly With Me

PA0495_1_m  The romantic notion and thrill of travelling by plane may be over for most of us but the allure is captured in many of the old advertising posters. This “then and now” look at air travel compares the messages and styles of some of our original vintage airline posters with some from the same companies today to show how print-based advertising has changed over the years.

American-6  “The legend is back” – to evoke a feeling of nostalgia, American Airlines recently launched an advertising campaign using well-known celebrities from the 1950s and today:

American-1

American-3  American-4

…compared with these posters advertising travel to Paris (1950s) and Australia (1970s) by American Airlines:

PT0294_1_m  PT0152_1_m

The messages are clear – this trend of combining a look to the past as well as future hope can been seen in United’s return to its “fly the friendly skies” slogan, Aeroflot’s upgrade to glamour through its ranking as “Europe’s most elegant cabin crew” in 2013 and LOT’s recent campaign as “the most modern airline in Europe”:

…from this amusing cartoon style ad, “if only I flew by LOT” (1958), to this striking image and bold statement:

PA0243_1_m ???????????????????????????????

Meanwhile, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) and KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) have shifted up a couple of technological notches from more traditional art and photography during the 1950s and 1960s to embrace today’s digital age:

“The Gay Gateway” – active both on social media and as a supporter of the LGBT community, KLM created an online game in 2014 that offered players a chance to win two economy comfort flights. In 2010 their play-to-win campaign offered flights to “the world’s proudest festivals” as part of its sponsorship of Sweden’s Stockholm Gay Life Award. Turn back the clock half a century to perhaps a different meaning and we have an SAS stewardess serving customers Copenhagen, Europe’s Gay Gateway, on a dish:

  PT0488_1_m

Major events have also been used to entice people to show their support of their country by flying with their national carrier. The recent Summer Olympics in London (2012) and Winter Olympics in Sochi (2014) brought us some creative advertising posters from companies such as KLM and Austrian Airlines that contrast, for example, with this more traditional mid-century artistic depiction of Paris:

AustrianAnna Netrebko Austrian Airlines

PT0296_1_m  (1960s)

Sign of the times – you may be wondering by now why we’ve chosen only a small selection of airlines when we’ve got some great BOAC, Swissair, TWA etc. posters listed on our website. This is because we’ve remained focused on airlines that are still in existence today for a more direct comparison. However, we feel we can make an exception for Dobrolet, a Russian airline founded in 1923 that was consolidated with other Soviet aviation organisations to become Aeroflot in 1932. Earlier this year, the company was relaunched as Aeroflot’s low-cost carrier but a notice on their website currently states that their flights are currently suspended due to recent EU sanctions:
