Spotlight on Art Nouveau Posters

PT1040_1_mArt Nouveau was an art movement developed from the 1890s to the 1910s, inspired by natural flowing curved lines, female forms and stylised botanical shapes.

This “New Art” movement influenced all aspects of applied art and design, including architecture, painting, graphic design, jewellery and metal work. The French name for this movement was also known as Secessionism and Jugendstil (among others).

A highly decorative style, Art Nouveau drew on nature and fantasy, as well as other developing movements of the time including the floral work of William Morris, the Arts and Crafts movement, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, French Rococo and Japanese art.PA1236_1_m

Notable poster artists and graphic designers from the Art Nouveau era include Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), Jules Cheret (1836-1932), and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Their vibrant designs often incorporated free-spirited females of the optimistic Belle Epoque period; the ‘Golden Age’ before the outbreak of World War One. Art Nouveau paved the way for Art Deco and the later Modernism art movement.

A handful of our current stock of original antique and vintage Art Nouveau posters are featured below (click on the images for more information):

→ This extraordinary collection of Soviet and Palestine posters was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.

In March 1969, the seller joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students on a visit to the USSR. During his stay in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities who sent several parcels of posters to him at university.

The Palestinian posters were obtained in Summer 1971 when the seller travelled to the Middle East to apply for a postgraduate course at the American University in Beirut. On arrival he realised the university was not fully functioning due to the unstable and rapidly deteriorating political and military situation. He stayed in Beirut for two months then visited Syria, Jordan and Israel, returning home via Beirut. At the time, he considered becoming a journalist so arranged an interview with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). During this meeting he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP was adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.

Original Vintage Posters: Inspirational Art and an Enjoyable Investment

Original vintage posters make an unusual and unique eco-friendly gift, suitable for all budgets. The variety of different sizes, colours, graphic design and artistic qualities, themes and topical subject matters can trigger strong emotional responses appealing to our sense of nostalgia and happy memories of childhood, travel, work interest or hobby.

Posters are also highly collectable and widely recognised as a sound art investment, bridging both contemporary and traditional styles. The rarest vintage posters by the most prominent artists have reached outstanding amounts in auctions around the world. Many posters, however, are still affordable and make an ideal present or interior design focal point on the walls of a home, office or even a film set.

In these uncertain economic conditions alternative investments are becoming increasingly popular. The saying “put your money where you can see it” rings a new truth and applies to investment in art. One of these forms of such investment, with generally a much lower starting point, is original vintage posters.

At the end of the 19th century posters were elevated to an art form by French artists and the standards set by these French poster designers raised the bar for other countries, leading to a wider acceptance of this media by the art community. Being very topical, posters absorbed and reflected the prevailing and changing art styles and fashions at a rapid pace and became part of the avant-garde art movement. Created to be displayed on walls, they were never meant to survive.

Poster prices vary greatly depending on the artist, subject matter and rarity. Advertising posters from the 1960s is a great entry point into collecting as the designs are bright, bold and quirky. Cinema posters also represent a good investment and it is best to stick to Oscar winners and cult classics. Hollywood stars are no strangers to investing in posters: Nicholas Cage recently sold his rare Dracula poster at an auction for $330,000 after buying it ten years ago for $77,000.

For those looking to start a collection, AntikBar will provide advice on creating collections and conduct searches on request for particular posters that are of interest to clients. Posters also make an ideal personal present and, given the wide variety of subjects covered by poster art, it is always possible to choose an ideal gift to match a special occasion or event.

AntikBar stock a vast range of posters covering subjects from advertising and cinema to propaganda and travel, across the decades and from around the world. The variety on offer is very appealing and can suit any interior design theme, from traditional to contemporary. With prices starting from under £50, they are also an affordable way to own an amazing piece of history and can bring future financial pleasure.
