Smirnoff “The Effect is Shattering”

These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’  for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)

The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.

These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

In The Spotlight: Cultural Revolution Propaganda Posters

PP1063_1_m

Unite For Victory (1971)

The Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution in China (1966-1976) was launched by the founding father of the Chinese Communist Party, Chairman Mao (Mao Zedong; 1893-1976), following the political and economic failure of his Great Leap Forward campaign (1958-1962).

Dynamic propaganda posters were produced to reach the masses, often featuring images of the leader with workers, soldiers, large red flags and slogans in bold red text.

Below are a few of our original vintage posters from the period (click on the images for more information):

When one just isn’t enough…

…go for a series! Sometimes a few framed original vintage posters work better than one large statement piece poster, for example, if the wall space isn’t high enough or you’re looking to brighten up an otherwise dark corridor with splashes of colour.

Let’s start with a few posters from this wonderfully retro series from the 1960s featuring some quirky slogans and fun images:

PA0100_1_m  PA0078_1_m

PA0082_1_m  PA0090_1_m

PA0088_1_m  PA0098_1_m

Come rain or snow, this original vintage 1958 London Transport series will certainly create an amusing focal point:

PA0663_1_m  PA0664_1_m

PA0662_1_m  PA0661_1_m

…and from Venice to Paris, this original 1981 Orient Express series will appeal to Art Deco lovers and travel romantics:

PT0417_1_m  PT0418_1_m

PT0419_1_m  PT0416_1_m

Propaganda posters were also often published as a series, such as these original vintage 1952 safety posters produced by the US Government for their pilots during the Cold War era:

PP0032_1_m

PP0029_1_m

PP0003_1_m

…and we have a few small and mid sized posters from this World War Two series, printed by the US Government in 1942 to help their troops recognise their allies:

For some carefree pin-up style fun, this vintage 1950s advertising series by Dickens for Goodyear soles aims to draw your attention to these ladies’ pretty feet:

Meanwhile, this dynamic series of original 1930s Castrol posters promotes their sponsored speed records and distance achievements on land and in the air:

PS0272_1_m  PS0275_1_m

PS0199_1_m  PS0274_1_m

For more sporting inspiration with an artistic touch, this series of original 1972 posters commissioned for the Munich Olympics aimed to “represent the intertwining of sports and art worldwide”:

PS0107_1_m  PS0084_1_m

PS0041_1_m  PS0055_1_m

PS0148_1_m  PS0075_1_m

Posters are suitable for any room of the home or office and this series of original 1930s Bovril posters that resemble the public service announcements of the time might provide some fun for the kitchen:

PA0161_1_m  PA0360_1_m

PA0356_1_m  PA0353_1_m

This series of child health posters was published in 1952 to promote “good health habits in school and at home” and would look fantastic in a child’s bedroom, playroom, nursery or school:

PP0282_1_m  PP0283_1_m

PP0287_1_m  PP0288_1_m

We have plenty to choose from – including more from some of the series featured above and some previously featured 1969 travel advertising posters for SNCF by Salvador Dali and a collection of 1986-1992 London Underground art posters – so why not browse our website and our blog for more ideas, such as decorating a cinema room with original vintage James Bond or Marilyn Monroe posters. Did you know…? The Soviet Union participated for the first time in the 1956 Winter Olympic Games in Cortina, Italy, making quite an impact by winning the most medals (7 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze).

Did you know…? The bid for 1976 Winter Olympic Games was originally won by Denver but, due to financial issues and environmental concerns, they declined and it was offered to Whistler. Due to government changes, Whistler also declined and the bid was offered to Innsbruck, host of the 1964 Winter Olympic Games twelve years earlier.

Summer of Sport 2012: The Olympic Games

In celebration of the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, here’s a quick look at past Olympic Games and other sporting events in original vintage posters:

The 1972 Munich Olympics set a high standard aimed to “represent the intertwining of sports and art worldwide” with a series of posters by various popular artists of the period (Peter Phillips, Horst Antes, Otl Aicher, David Hockney among others) commissioned to design posters in Germany for their advertising campaign.

Munich Olympics – Athletics, designed by Peter Phillips; 1972 Olympic Games Munich, designed by Horst Antes

Munich Olympics (equestrian), designed by Garry Cranham; Munich Olympics – Sailing, designed by P. Cornelius; Munich Olympics – Swimming, based on a photo by Herbert Graaf

Aside from the poster artwork for the 1972 Munich Olympics, other Olympic Games and Olympic-related sporting events have also provided some fantastic designs, including:

Austrian Olympic Fund 1936, designed by Schroffner; XVII Rome Olympic Games 1960 – Historic Games, designed by A. Alessandrini

Olympic Spring 1965, designed by V. Volikov; Mexico Olympic Games, 1968

…and let’s not forget the Winter Olympics:

Olympic Winter Games Innsbruck 1964, designed by Fred Lindholm; Grenoble Olympic Games 1968, designed by Alain Perceval

Visit www.AntikBar.co.uk for more original vintage posters (including those pictured below) and follow @AntikBar on Twitter and Pinterest for “Poster of the Day” tweets/pins and other news and events updates.

Wishing all the competitors the best of luck, let’s end this short online exhibition of original vintage posters with the inspirational words of the Olympic Motto:

“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
