Featured:
Smirnoff “The Effect is Shattering”
These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’ for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)
The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.
Featured:
ERP Marshall Plan Posters
A few of the original vintage posters produced for the post-war US sponsored European Recovery Program (1948) Marshall Plan are listed in our next auction. These designs were all submitted for the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held in Europe.
These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

→ This extraordinary collection of Soviet and Palestine posters was acquired by our seller during his trips to the USSR and Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s.
In March 1969, the seller joined a UK delegation of the National Union of Students on a visit to the USSR. During his stay in Moscow, Leningrad and Tallinn, he acquired some of the posters. Later that year, he wrote to the Soviet authorities who sent several parcels of posters to him at university.
The Palestinian posters were obtained in Summer 1971 when the seller travelled to the Middle East to apply for a postgraduate course at the American University in Beirut. On arrival he realised the university was not fully functioning due to the unstable and rapidly deteriorating political and military situation. He stayed in Beirut for two months then visited Syria, Jordan and Israel, returning home via Beirut. At the time, he considered becoming a journalist so arranged an interview with Bassam Abu Sharif, the spokesperson for the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). During this meeting he was given many of the posters that form this collection. The new symbol of the PFLP was adopted in May 1969 and these posters are among the earliest published by the Palestinian resistance.

Original Vintage Poster Auction (featuring a significant collection of Polish posters)
Our next original vintage poster auction on Saturday 14 January will feature a significant collection of Polish posters [see below] as well as a variety of other posters from around the world.
New and experienced collectors and dealers will benefit from our low starting prices with no reserves, some starting from under £5.
A preview will be open at our gallery from 11-14 January (until 2pm on 14 January) and the auction will start online at 4pm UK time.
Please visit our auction page on LiveAuctioneers or The Saleroom to view our catalogue and register to bid. [Note: more items are still being uploaded to our catalogue so please continue to check back for new listings.]
This significant collection of Polish posters was amassed by Eberhardt Voigt (1920-1983), a keen amateur filmographer and poster collector.
Mr Voigt joined the film club movement that dominated the screens in the 1950s and became friends with Enno Patalas, Werner Krusche, Theo Fürstenau and Peter Pleyer. In 1957 he produced a documentary about Turkey with Viktor Schamoni, which included footage of the visit of Theodor Heuss, the German President.
In 1956 he met the Polish film journalist Leon Buckowieki (1916-2005) at the Bad Ems film festival, both united in the hope that Polish October and the new leader Gomolka would secure a period of more freedom in Poland, following the uprising of workers in Poznan earlier that year. They met again at the Kurzfilmtage in Oberhausen and kept in touch, with many of Leon’s letters arriving in tubes containing posters by the most artistic designers of Poland’s great period of film poster production.
This collection was exhibited once in Munich during the 1970s in a show organised by the German film director Peter Schamoni (1934-2011). Mr Voigt’s family has kept this collection since his death in 1983 but would now like to give new collectors the opportunity to engage with the heyday of Polish poster art.

Sneak Peek at a few of the 300+
original vintage posters listed in this auction:
with features by:
Just Collecting: “For years, Polish artists have gained a reputation for creating some of the most original, eye-catching and downright weird posters for famous movies. The poster for the Polish release of the WWII classic The Great Escape was created in 1967 by the renowned graphic artist Wiktor Górka (1922-2004), who also produced posters for classics including Spartacus, Cabaret and Moby Dick. This striking design distils the action into a series of stylized figures, including one on a motorcycle representing Steve McQueen’s iconic fence jump, and is a perfect example of how Polish artists reinterpreted imagery from films in unique ways.”
Antiques Trade Gazette: “A collection of film posters dating to the heyday of Polish poster art in the 1950-60s will be offered without reserve in AntikBar’s January auction…This example for the American comedy film Sabrina starring Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart is guided at £150-300. It was made in 1967 by Maciej Zbikowski (b. 1935), a Polish poster designer known for his signature use of simple shapes in outlined block colours.”
