Smirnoff “The Effect is Shattering”

These original vintage Smirnoff advertising posters are part of the 1970s campaign by the London-based Young and Rubican agency, which aimed to promote the vodka as a way to achieve glamour and excitement as an escape from the humdrum of daily life. (To emphasise the campaign’s risky innuendos, Avocado Sweet observes: “Substitute the word ‘heroin’  for ‘Smirnoff’ and it still makes sense.”)

The advertising campaign proved to be a great success for the company, resulting in vodka becoming so chic that it overtook gin in popularity and saw Smirnoff’s sales triple. In 1976 the campaign ended, following the tightening of the rules on alcohol advertising led by the government and the Advertising Standards Authorities in 1975.

These posters are all available in our Vintage Poster Auction on Saturday 3 August. Click here for more information with links to view our catalogue and register to bid via Live Auctioneers, The Saleroom or Invaluable.

++ Update ++

In the News: “Oh, I do like to be beside a seaside poster worth £5,000: Nostalgia for romantic holiday era creates boom in demand for old posters…

Once fashionable hotspots such as Southport, Blackpool, Scarborough and Bognor Regis may have long lost their status as luxury destinations, but…this does not stop many reminiscing about this bygone age.

A yearning for a more romantic holiday era dominated by wholesome family values has created a wave of nostalgia for old posters of the British seaside. It has also pushed up values of collectable posters by 20 per cent over the past decade.

…collectable travel poster artists of the time are Tom Purvis, Ronald Lampitt, Frank Sherwin, Alan Durman, Edward McKnight Kauffer, Frank Newbould and Norman Wilkinson.

Splashing Out:
– Until the late Victorian era, holidays were for the wealthy only. Workers were given Sunday off for church, but it was not until near the end of the 19th Century that people started to get Saturday afternoon off too – and the weekend was born.
– Bathing in sea water was believed to be good for the health and this led to the growth of resorts such as Brighton, Margate, Eastbourne, Blackpool, Southport and Bournemouth.
– Bognor was granted ‘Regis’ status after King George V convalesced there in the 1920s following lung surgery.
– A rapidly expanding rail network boosted the appeal of seaside resorts – helped by rail company posters romanticising them. The early 20th Century was the golden age of rail before the mass ownership of cars and the advent of package trips…”

Our recent slideshow featuring a few of our original vintage posters and publications by designers profiled by Sophie Churcher for Christie’s South Kensington (click here to read the full article and click on the image links below for more information):

“The focus for collectors of posters is very often subject matter. The subject of a work is key to its ability to connect with the viewer and in turn increase its value. Having said that there are masters of poster design as there are of art and these artists play an important role in shaping the market for collectable pieces.

Travel Back in Time: Come Fly With Me

PA0495_1_m  The romantic notion and thrill of travelling by plane may be over for most of us but the allure is captured in many of the old advertising posters. This “then and now” look at air travel compares the messages and styles of some of our original vintage airline posters with some from the same companies today to show how print-based advertising has changed over the years.

American-6  “The legend is back” – to evoke a feeling of nostalgia, American Airlines recently launched an advertising campaign using well-known celebrities from the 1950s and today:

…compared with these posters advertising travel to Paris (1950s) and Australia (1970s) by American Airlines:

The messages are clear – this trend of combining a look to the past as well as future hope can been seen in United’s return to its “fly the friendly skies” slogan, Aeroflot’s upgrade to glamour through its ranking as “Europe’s most elegant cabin crew” in 2013 and LOT’s recent campaign as “the most modern airline in Europe”:

…from this amusing cartoon style ad, “if only I flew by LOT” (1958), to this striking image and bold statement:

Meanwhile, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) and KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) have shifted up a couple of technological notches from more traditional art and photography during the 1950s and 1960s to embrace today’s digital age:

“The Gay Gateway” – active both on social media and as a supporter of the LGBT community, KLM created an online game in 2014 that offered players a chance to win two economy comfort flights. In 2010 their play-to-win campaign offered flights to “the world’s proudest festivals” as part of its sponsorship of Sweden’s Stockholm Gay Life Award. Turn back the clock half a century to perhaps a different meaning and we have an SAS stewardess serving customers Copenhagen, Europe’s Gay Gateway, on a dish:

Major events have also been used to entice people to show their support of their country by flying with their national carrier. The recent Summer Olympics in London (2012) and Winter Olympics in Sochi (2014) brought us some creative advertising posters from companies such as KLM and Austrian Airlines that contrast, for example, with this more traditional mid-century artistic depiction of Paris:

Sign of the times – you may be wondering by now why we’ve chosen only a small selection of airlines when we’ve got some great BOAC, Swissair, TWA etc. posters listed on our website. This is because we’ve remained focused on airlines that are still in existence today for a more direct comparison. However, we feel we can make an exception for Dobrolet, a Russian airline founded in 1923 that was consolidated with other Soviet aviation organisations to become Aeroflot in 1932. Earlier this year, the company was relaunched as Aeroflot’s low-cost carrier but a notice on their website currently states that their flights are currently suspended due to recent EU sanctions:

In the Spotlight: Edward McKnight Kauffer

PT0386_1_m  American artist and illustrator, Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954), was one of the most renowned poster designers of the 20th century. Born Edward Kauffer in Montana, he lived in an orphanage from 1893-1899 where he started to draw. On moving back home after his mother’s re-marriage, his mother and step-father supported his artistic talent and aspirations. He moved to San Francisco in 1910 where he worked for the art dealer and bookseller, Paul Elder, and continued his art studies in the evenings at the Mark Hopkins Institute, California School of Design. A professor at Utah University, Joseph McKnight, sponsored him in 1912 and gave him a loan to move to Paris. (Out of respect for his sponsor, Edward Kauffer adopted McKnight as his middle name.)

PT0627_1_m  In 1913 he moved to France via a short stint at the Art Institute of Chicago and a visit to Munich, where he was undoubtedly influenced by the European post-impressionist paintings and move towards modernism on display, as well as poster art and typography. He continued his studies at the Academie Moderne until the outbreak of World War One when he moved to London in 1914 with his wife, Grace Ehrlich (a pianist), and daughter, Ann.

PA0390_1_m  In London, he was introduced to Frank Pick, Publicity Manager for London Underground, leading to his commission to produce a staggering 140 posters for London Underground, later London Transport. His style of artwork developed from a more traditional painterly style to a more modern and dynamic graphic design style and his success as an advertising poster artist was outstanding. In 1921 he exhibited in New York but, not achieving the same response from commissions as he had in London, he returned to England.

PA0841_m_  In 1923, on one of his regular visits to Paris, he met Marion Dorn, an American interior designer. He left his wife and daughter for her and their relationship included professional collaboration on a few projects, such as the interior and advertising designs for Orient Lines’ flagship ocean liner. (Edward and Marion later married in 1950 but then separated in 1953.) Now a renowned graphic designer, he was also busy with other commercial clients, including BP and Shell Oil, and he was involved with illustrating books and book covers, textiles, theatre and interior design.

PP0152_1_m  At the start of World War Two, he reluctantly moved to New York. His commissions in America started with MOMA and he went on to produce propaganda posters during the war before working for his final client, American Airlines, in 1947. The success and recognition he achieved in London was soon repeated in New York and, in terms of his commercial work, he is now most well known for his London Underground, Shell and American Airlines poster artworks, as well as his book designs for Lund Humphries. Edward McKnight Kauffer was certainly a prolific and dedicated designer, working right up to his death at the age of 64 in 1954.
