About the Fair:
“Since its inception in 2009, the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair has grown to become a foremost international showcase for art and antiques, as well as one of the most prestigious events on the London social calendar. It’s one of only two yearly events to grace the beautiful Berkeley Square. At the heart of the modern, cosmopolitan city yet steeped in historical resonance, the location could not be more fitting.

100 exhibitors present work from across the art, antiques, design and decorative arts spectrum. Including jewellery, furniture, carpets, tapestries, antiquities, clocks, ceramics, silver and fine art, authenticity is assured thanks to a 70-member specialist committee pre-vetting everything on sale. With prices ranging from £500 to £500,000 and above, sought-after pieces appeal to both the established collector and first-time buyer alike.

A unique stage that welcomes visitors from across the world, the fair blends eclecticism, artistry and hospitality in perfect measure. An esteemed occasion, and a door to an intriguing world.”

Spotlight on Mathieu and Dali – The Abstract and The Surreal

These colourful abstract Air France travel advertising posters by French artist, Georges Mathieu, and these ever-surreal fantastic posters for the French National Railways (SNCF) by Spanish artist, Salvador Dali, listed at www.AntikBar.co.uk are still as bright and inspiring enough as they were in the 1950s-70s for some holiday dreaming today:

PT0245_1_m   PT0456_1_m

Although he never received a formal art education, Georges Mathieu (1921-1912) became a notable French artist through his distinctive compositions using striking colours and lines to create stylish abstract masterpieces (the French equivalent of Abstract Expressionism also known as Lyrical Abstraction, Tachisme or Art Informel). These posters were commissioned by Air France during the 1960s-70s.

The prominent Spanish artist, Salvador Dali (1904-1989), was commissioned by SNCF to produce at series of advertising posters published in 1970. These artworks feature butterflies, one of the animals he used in his surreal paintings to signify transformation, from the Greek ‘psyche’ meaning butterfly but also – and perhaps more importantly for Dali – soul.

Dali’s personality was as bizarre and eccentric as his artwork, most notably in his up-turned moustache and attention-seeking antics. He was also a great sculptor, architect, movie maker and theatre scenery designer. The depth of his imagination can clearly be seen in these posters advertising train travel to popular destinations in France.

Feeling Inspired by The Great Gatsby…

PA0502_1_m  In 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby captured the spirit of the ‘roaring twenties’ era, becoming recognised as a classic American novel that is now reaching a whole new generation of movie-goers through the current release of Baz Luhrmann’s adaption starring Leonardo diCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Tobey Maguire.

Visually, the 1920s and 1930s brought a dramatic period of change in the art, craft and design world from Art Nouveau to stunning Art Deco and other new styles, which was reflected in poster designs of the age. Inspired by the luxury and glamour of this rich, bold and very modern period, here are a few original vintage posters available at www.AntikBar.co.uk:
